Note the headline: "German Raider Flees In S. Atlantic"
(The report in columns 4-5 states that the German raider, which was the Hilfskreuzer Thor, outran HMS Carnarvon Castle and escaped. It also claims that the German broke off the engagement. In reality, Carnarvon Castle took several hits and had six men killed in the battle. Thor received no damage and it was the British who broke off the fight due to damage.)

(Kemmendine was sunk by the Hilfskreuzer Atlantis on July 13, 1940. All 147 people on board were removed by Atlantis and there were no casualties.)

(SS Newchwang survived the war and was scrapped in 1950.)
