Note the report in column 3: "R.A.F. Sink 4 Italian Warships"
(The report claims that two submarines, a destroyer and a depot ship were sunk in an air raid on the Italian naval base at Bomba, Libya. Actually only the submarine Iride was sunk, if any other ships were damaged in the raid, they were not damaged enough to be removed from service.)

Note the report in column 3: "Italians Admit R.A.F. Activity"
(The official Italian communique for today names the torpedo boat from yesterday's communique, which supposedly sank a British submarine, as the Papa. It also relates a dramatic account of the sinking. "The enemy submarine fired three torpedoes without hitting her. By rapid manoevuring the Italian ship darted towards the submarine with the intention of ramming her, at the same time dropped numerous depth charges. The submarine was irreparably damaged and she turned over keel upwards and then sank." There was just one slight difference between this account and the truth, no British, or any other submarines were sunk on this date. In the month of Aug. 1940 only 8 submarines were lost, 3 British, 3 German, 1 Italian and 1 Japanese.)
