The Second World War was the first war in which you could be killed in your home by a weapon fired from hundreds of miles away. I am of course referring to the Vergeltungswaffe, better known as the V-1 and V-2 rockets of Nazi Germany. First used to attack England, the rockets were later aimed at ports along the coast of Europe in response to the D-Day landings. On January 28, 1945 two officers from the Liberty ship Will Rogers were ashore at Antwerp, Belgium when one such attack took place. Perhaps they were happy to be ashore, safe from U-boat attack, but this new terror from the sky took both of their lives instantly. Most of us have grown up with the threat of the ICBM and its nuclear payload, but a one ton explosive on a rocket was something no sailor thought would ever be a danger to him in 1945. |
