Daily Event for April 30, 2013

Off Ireland on April 30, 1917 the Russian bark Borrowdale was stopped and sunk by SMS U-21 and Kapitänleutnant Otto Hersing. At only 1,268 tons the ship was small potatoes for Hersing, who had sunk two British battleships (Majestic and Triumph) along with well over 100,000 tons of other shipping. In the case of the Borrowdale it seems no lives were lost.

It appears this picture of Borrowdale was taken from the western bank of the river Avon, just down from the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The ship is being towed up river towards the famous Bristol docks.
