May 12, 1984 Elrod FFG-55 was launched at Bath Iron Works, Bath Maine. Elrod was named in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Major Henry T. Elrod, USMC. Elrod was the first man to sink a Japanese warship single handed when he bombed the Japanese
destroyer Kisaragi. He was killed during the defense of Wake Island on Dec. 23, 1941 and is now buried at Arlington National Cemetery. |
