An air raid on Piraeus, Greece by He 111's of 2./KG4 on April 6, 1941 caused severe damage and sank a number of vessels in the harbor. The most spectacular of the sinkings came when the Clan Fraser was hit by a bomb and exploded. Clan Fraser was carrying over 200 tons of T-N-T and the explosion was so powerful that is set another ammunition ship ablaze. This was the City of Roubaix, she exploded as well. Another ship, the Cingalese Prince was damaged by the explosions of the two ammo carriers, but was later repaired. The total losses in vessels was very high, a reported 13 ships (41,942), 60 lighters and 25 motor sailing vessels were lost. I have been unable to locate the names of all the ships lost in the attack, or the names of all the men lost, but in Clan Fraser six men perished. There were apparently no casualties in the City of Roubaix, perhaps they were able to get off the ship before the fire reached the hold. |
