February 22, 1886 the barkentine Kloto sailed from Baltimore for New York never to be seen again. She was owned by Weltch, Humphrey & Company of Boston and was loaded with coal. What happened to her is not known, but at one time it was suspected that she had sunk the SS Oregon. This is unlikely as the Oregon disaster happened on Mar. 14, almost a month after the ship sailed. The schooner Charles H. Morse is the ship that sank the Oregon, when and why Kloto went down is still unknown. |
