February 16, 1942 Alabama BB-60 became the first battleship launched at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the only battleship launched at the yard that was ever commissioned. Only three other battleships were ordered through the yard, the first, North Carolina BB-52 was laid down on Jan. 12, 1920, but cancelled and scrapped on the ways. The other two were, Kentucky BB-66 and Louisiana BB-71. Kentucky was the only other battleship launched by the yard, that on Jan. 20, 1950, but after the war was over there was no need for new battleships and she was sold and scrapped. Likewise with Louisiana, she was cancelled and scrapped before the keel was laid. |
