Daily Event for January 5, 2012

During the Allied invasion of the Philippines many ships came under attack by Japanese aircraft. One of the ships damaged in a Kamikaze attack was HMAS Arunta I-30. She was targeted by two aircraft, but both missed, however bombs exploded near the ship killing two crewmen and injuring five others. Her steering gear was damaged, but soon repaired enough to continue with her mission. Proper repairs were made and she rejoined the fight until July when she was paid off and sent in for a refit. She continued in service until 1957 when she was put into reserve and then sent to the breakers yard. She sank in tow to the breakers in Feb. 1969.
