The 279' freighter SS Baron Ailsa of the Kelvin Shipping Company was torpedoed and sunk by SMS UB-72 off the Smalls lighthouse on May 9, 1918. Ten men were killed in the sinking, there were several survivors including the master. I have no other details about the loss. Baron Ailsa was the last ship sunk by UB-72, she was sunk three days later by HMS-D-4, most of the crew perished with her. |
