The cargo ship Gwendoline was launched at Palmer's Shipbuilding's Howdon yard on Oct. 30, 1882, she was 270' long and 35 foot in the beam. She was built for John Wilson & Company of London and remained there until 1914 when she was sold to Palgrave Murphy & Company of Dublin and renamed City of Swansea. On September 25, 1917 she was located by SMS UB-40 off Berry Head in the English Channel, she was shortly thereafter sent to the bottom. Two crewmen sadly went with her. |
