Daily Event for October 3, 2009

On Oct. 3, 1944 three submarines left Saipan after refueling and headed out on patrol off southern Luzon, Philippines. The three boats USS Blackfish SS-221, USS Seadragon SS-194 and USS Shark SS-314 were acting as an attack group with the nickname Blakely's Behemoths, named for the commander of Shark, Cdr. Edward N. Blakely. Shark and Blakely were on their third patrol, they never returned.

Nobody knows for sure what happened to the Shark, but it is assumed that she was lost with all hands following a depth charge attack by the Japanese destroyer Harukaze south of Luzon on Oct. 24. Some reports state she may have been sunk after sinking a Japanese transport that was carrying U.S. POW's, however at this time the only such ship I am able to identify is the Arisan Maru, but this ship was sunk north of Luzon by USS Snook SS-279. Shark and her eighty-seven men were listed as missing and presumed lost as of Nov. 27, 1944, in 2009 they are still missing, but not forgotten.
