July 13, 1943 the Italian submarine Nereide was sunk by the British destroyers HMS Echo H-23 and HMS Ilex D-61 in the Strait of Messina off Augusta, Sicily. The boat was depth charged to the surface and shelled until she sank, in the process twenty-one Italian submariners were killed. I have no other information about the loss.
