Daily Event for May 20

May 20, 1942 while on her maiden voyage the Liberty ship SS George Calvert was located and torpedoed by U 753. She was the first victim of U-753, which would only sink two other ships before being sunk herself just less than a year later of May 13, 1943.

It took three torpedoes to sink the George Calvert, the second one killing three men and sending the stern gun overboard. The 47 survivors abandoned the ship in three lifeboats and landed on the Cuban coast the following morning.
