March 29, 1941 the steam trawler Exeter, a veteran of the Great War, was bombed and sunk off Ballycotton, Ireland by German aircraft. She was built at the Govan shipyard of
Mackie & Thomson, launched Sept. 1, 1897 for
Hagerup, Doughty & Co. Ltd. of Grimsby. In 1917, after she was requisitioned into the fishing reserve fleet and returned to her owners in 1919. After a series of owners she finally ended up in the hands of Yolland & Llewellin Trawling Co, Milford Haven, Wales, this in 1939. What happened on board will never be known as all nine of the crew perished in the attack. |
