Daily Event for March 22

Launched on July 7, 1936 the USS Pickerel SS-177 made six war patrols before departing from Pearl Harbor
on her seventh. From there she stopped at Midway to refuel and set off on Mar. 22, 1943 for a patrol off
Honshu, Japan, she was never heard from again.

While she was officially declared lost on May 12, it was not until Aug. 15 that the Navy released the information
to the press. Even after sixty-six years the true cause of her loss and the location of the wreck, which is the
grave of seventy-four men, remains a secret of the sea.
