Dec. 9, 1917 one of the top scoring U-boats of World War 1 was sunk. The SMS UB-18, a boat that sent 129 ships to the bottom, was rammed, not by a large warship, but by the 176 ton minesweeping trawler Ben Lawers. UB-18 was found approaching a coastal convoy when the Ben Lawers rammed the boat just behind the conning tower. The boat sank with all hands, the Ben Lawers was damaged, but made port and even survived the war. |
