Nov. 10, 1942 the U-163 scored a hit on a ship escorting convoy TAG-20, USS Erie PG-50 was the victim. She had been the rescue ship for the 45 man crew of the Fort Good Hope and again for some of the survivors of the Lebore, but now her crew needed to be rescued, not because she was sinking, but because she was burning and ammunition was going off. The attack killed seven of her crew. The HNLMS Van Kinebergen removed those who had survived and the ship was abandoned. Still burning four days later firefighters boarded the ship and extinguished the fire and she was towed to port, but before she could be repaired she rolled over and sank. |
