Built in 1914, hired by the Admiralty in 1915 and lost in 1916, the trawler Benton Castle had a short career. She was owned by Castle Steam Trawlers of Swansea and was used as a minesweeper near the mouth of the River Dart. On Nov. 10, 1916 she hit a mine laid by SMS UC-17 six miles south of Brixham and sank. Nine of the crew, including the master, were lost. The only survivor, James Taylor, was picked up by HM Trawler Riskato, but died of wounds later the same day. |
