Built in 1914, hired by the Admiralty in 1915 and lost in 1916, the trawler Benton Castle had a short career. She was owned by Castle Steam Trawlers of Swansea and was used as a minesweeper near the mouth of the River Dart. On Nov. 10, 1916 she hit a mine laid by UC-17 six miles south of Brixham and sank. Ten of the crew, including the master, were lost. I don't know if there were any survivors. |
