June 24, 1898 During the Spanish-American war the sailing vessel Ampala was captured by the USS Vicksburg (later PG-11). The sailing vessel was taken to Key West as a prize. Vicksburg had already captured two other Spanish vessels Oriente and Fernandito, these would be the only ships taken by Vicksburg in that war. In World War 1 she captured the Alexander Agassiz on suspicion the ship was a German raider, her crew and passengers were arrested and taken to Los Angeles. It was found by an American prize court that the ship was in fact not a raider and the US was ordered to pay restitution to the ship's owner. |
