On Jan. 12, 1868 the Guion Line's SS Chicago was wrecked near Queenstown, Ireland. The ship's maiden voyage was made on Dec. 18, 1866, only a little more than a year earlier. She was 339' long and could carry almost 900 passengers. Fortunately no lives were lost in the accident but the ship was a total loss. The ravages of the sea broke down the wreck over time and the Chicago vanished memory until the White Star liner Celtic wrecked at the same place on Dec. 10, 1928. During her scrapping the wreck of the Chicago was rediscovered by accident. |
