Daily Event for January 11


On Jan. 11, 1879 the SS Zanzibar sailed from New York for Glasgow, Scotland never to be heard from again.
All forty-eight on board were lost. This was one of five ships which sailed from New York in the winter of
1878-79 bound for the UK and Europe which were lost and never heard from again. The others were the
Homer (bound for Liverpool) with 43 on board departed Dec. 17, 1878, Herman Ludwig (bound for Antwerp)
with 50 on board departed Sept. 28, 1878, Bosnia (bound for Bristol) and the Surbiton (bound for Rotterdam) with 33 on board departed Feb. 18, 1879.
