Daily Event for May 23

May 23, 1916 the RS Som, a Russian submarine, was run down and sunk by the Swedish steamer
Angermanland while in the Aaland Strait. The Som was a Holland type submarine built as the Fulton at Holland's Electric Boat Company in 1901. In April of 1902 while en route from New York to Washington D.C. there was a battery explosion which injured most of the seven man crew on board. These were the first serious injuries ever on board a Holland submarine. When she sank she took all eighteen men with her.
