Daily Event for July 15

July 15, 1942 the Gleaves Class destroyer Thompson DD-627 was launched at Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding. Even though the Thompson served in both World War 2 and Korea she is most famous as the USS Caine under the   Command of Lt. Commander Philip Francis Queeg. Under Queeg's command she was almost lost in a typhoon but came through it when the first officer, Lt. Barney Greenwald, took command. I am of course referring to her starring roll in the movie The Caine Mutiny.

Following the filming of the movie in mid 1953 the Thompson participated in two more exercises and was decommissioned May 23, 1955 and placed in reserve and allowed to rot for almost 20 years. Even though she was a veteran of two wars and a movie star the Thompson could not be saved from the scrap heap and was broken up in 1972.
