Daily Event for January 5, 2006

The steamship India, which was launched in 1881, was last seen on January 5, 1901 passing Sagres, Portugal. A single screw ship of 1,500 tons, she was built for the Carr Line and used on the Hamburg to New York route. In 1890 India was sold to the Hamburg-America Line and sold again in 1894 to G. L. Glasor of Hamburg. When she was built she could carry up to 500 passengers in third class accommodations, having no first or second class. The India became another victim of an unknown disaster sometime after passing Portugal. Nothing was ever seen or heard from her again.
