Daily Event for October 23

October 23, 1910: The Lisboa ran aground on Soldier's Reef, 60 miles north of Cape Town, South Africa. Lisboa, a Portuguese owned ship, was on her second voyage, which began in Lisbon on Oct. 1. She arrived in Luanda, Angola 15 days later. With 250 passengers the Lisboa departed and began the final leg of the voyage however, at 10:50am she hit the reef. Capt. Menezes sent out a distress call and it was answered by a Norwegian fishing vessel. They were able to rescue all but seven people. The Norwegian vessel's crew then took possession of the Lisboa and raised the Norwegian flag. This did not really matter as the ship was a total loss.
