Daily Event for October 17

On October 17, 1871 the White Star liner Adriatic was launched at Harland & Wolff in Belfast. From the beginning all ships built for White Star were built by Harland & Wolff. Adriatic served the line until 1899 when she was considered to old for passenger service. Most of her career went without note however, in the seventeen years she sailed the ocean she ran down and sank no less that three other boats. This included the schooners Columbus and Harvest Queen and the Brig G.A. Pike. Adriatic was scrapped in Preston in 1899.
