July 25, 1956 the Italian liner Andrea Doria was rammed by the Stockholm off Nantucket. As we all know there has been much written about the Doria so I don't need to go over it all here. Here are some of the details. The ships collided at 11:45 p.m. In the initial crash 45 people from the Doria and 5 from Stockholm were killed. One child died later of head injuries received while being put into a lifeboat. 1,660 in total were rescued by other ships. The Ile de France picked up 753, Stockholm 542. The Cape Ann, USNS Pvt. William H. Thomas T-AP-185, Robert E. Hopkins and Edward H Allen DE-531 recovered the rest. The Andrea Doria, the pride of the Italian Line, sank at 10:09 a.m. the following day. Since then the wreck has become a popular diving site for experienced divers. However, as many as 12 people have died diving on the wreck. |
