Daily Event for July 23, 2005


July 23, 1908: The Don Matias was sunk in a collision off the coast of Chili. Launched for Hamburg South America Line in 1873 as Valparaiso she was 298' by 35' and registered at 2,247 tons. She was used on the Germany-Brazil route until sold to British owners in 1892. She was sold again in 1902 to Chilean owners and renamed Don Matias. No casualty figures are available.
