Daily Event for August 4

August 4, 1906 the Italian steamer Sirio hit the rocks off of Cape Palos, Spain. The 380' ship was running close to shore at full speed when the accident happened. The reason for this was that they had loaded illegal emigrants bound for South America and the captain was running outside the shipping lanes to avoid detection. This action caused the deaths of 443 of those on board.
