Note the report in column 4:"Manchester Plans Own Spitfire Squadron"
(The City of Manchester was kicking in £75,000 to buy Spitfires for the war effort.)
Also note the report in column 4: "Mother of Designer"
(The mother of R. J. Mitchell, the man who designed the Spitfire, is donating to the fund to buy Spitfires. Sadly Mr. Mitchell did not live to see how important his machine would become to England. He died of cancer in 1937.)
Also note the report in column 4: "Torpedoed Swedish Steamer's SOS"
(The freighter Hedrun (misspelled in the report as Hedrum) was sunk by U-48, ten men of the crew were lost with the ship.)
Also note the report in column 5: "Italy's Denial"
(Italy and Germany blame the British for sinking the Greek cruiser Helle, the Germans, that is to say, Joseph Goebbels, blamed Churchill directly. This is a tactic he used after the Athenia was sunk by U-30 on the third day of the war.)

August 16, 1940: Front page of The Daily Mail, Hull, England.

Note the report in column 1: "Total Down Yesterday Was 169 - Official"
(This announcement by the Air Ministry also states only 34 British aircraft were shot down. Keeping the "Never Doubt" clause in mind, the best figures I can find indicate that 60 German aircraft were shot down in combat on Aug. 15. Three others are reported as missing, no known cause and 7 were lost for other reasons. That makes a total of 70. They were closer with the RAF figures; 31 aircraft were lost with five others being a total loss due to combat damage.)
