Also note the report in column 5: "Brand Plot Sink U.S. Ship Fantastic Lie"
(In a lame attempt to sow division between the United States and England, the German propaganda machine releases a claim that England will sink the SS President Roosevelt and blame Germany for the attack. After the sinking of Athenia, the Germans used the same tactic, they blamed England, and Churchill directly, for the loss of American lives in the ship which was sunk by a German U-boat. This so-called warning may have been a preemptive attempt to give Germany some cover just in case one of their U-boats should sink the ship by mistake.)
