From:
Commander Task Force SIXTY-FOUR.
(Commander Destroyer Squadron NINETEEN).
To:
Commander in Chief, United States Fleet.
Subject:
A/S Action Report of U.S.S. Turner Covering Action on
23 October 1943.

Reference:
(a) Lantflt ltr. 13 CL-43.

1. Forwarded direct without advance copy as basic report was transmitted via Commander Task Force
SIXTY-FOUR at sea.

2. The U.S.S. TURNER and the U.S.S. STURTEVANT were left in the contact area at 2000 zone time on
23 October 1943. They were ordered to remain a minimum of 12 hours and longer if considered
advisable or necessary but if possible to rejoin by sunset on 24 October. The rejoining of the U.S.S.
TURNER and U.S.S. STURTEVANT was considered desirable due to the fact that during their absence
the escort unit had but six escorts and an advanced escort is considered almost essential in submarine
waters. It was from this advanced escort position that the U.S.S. TURNER made her original contact
on 23 October and undoubtedly prevented the convoy from being sighted or attacked.

3. The aggressive action of the commanding officer to ram, if possible, is noted. It is regretted that
possibly due to necessity of rejoining under existing conditions more positive evidence of a sure
kill could not be obtained.
