My father, George Collis, served as a Royal Marine on HMS Implacable during her time with the Pacific Fleet. He sadly died in 1979. I should very much like to hear of memories anyone had of Implacable's service around Japan and any landings in Japan made by the ship at the end of the war. My father always spoke very fondly of the island of Miyajima, off the coast of Hiroshima. I would love to hear from anyone who visited there (or of recounted memories) at that time.

Many thanks,
Lynne Collis

My dad was an LSO or I think they called them batsmen (waved the aircraft down) on H.M.S. Implacable before this he served on H.M.S.  Lawford before in was sunk,, he was one of the lucky survivors. He had many friends on the carrier and we do have pictures of some. He ended up in Australia and I think he said they had to sweep for mines. He unfortunately died riddled with cancer as others I read about. His name was Stephen Smale and he came from Peppercombe in North Devon. I wonder if anyone who knew him is still alive.

My father, Mike Banyard, was a pilot in 880 Squadron with Mike Crossley as squadron leader. I went to Mike Crossley's memorial service on the Isle of Wight. The Royal Navy flew a Seafire over the church at the end of the service, it brought tears to your eyes. I managed to buy a large wooden model of Mike Crossley's Seafire PP972 with the 11-5 markings in Pacific camouflage scheme and it is proudly displayed with a photo of 880 Squadron lined up on deck, going through Sydney Harbour after the war had ended. I would like to hear from any family of 880 squadron, particularly from Ken Newton's family, as I have a very rare photo of his plane on the USS Essex.

Regards,
Alex Banyard

I am looking for information about my father. His name was Michael Murray Burgoyne. I have been told that he served on the HMS Implacable. I have a photo of him in uniform, but no other information. He was born on April 7th 1926. I don't know what year he would have served. All I know is that when he left he went to sea as a Fisher man and he drowned in February 1957. Hope you are able to help me.

Thank you,
Mrs. Anne Sturley née Burgoyne

My brother (Ray) and I were born in Sydney, Australia during the decade following the end of WWII. Our parents met in 1945/6 when our father, who we believe served on board the HMS Implacable, docked in Sydney harbour. Here he met our mother and although they never married, they had a de facto relationship for several years then permamently separated shortly after my birth in 1953.

Soon after the break up in their relationship and being either unable or unwilling to take care of us, our father handed us over to the NSW Government Welfare department as abandoned children. Although in later years we found our mother, she refused to disclose any detail on our father hence we have not had any success in tracing his origins, background or heritage.

The only information our mother and/or the NSW Department of Social Services have been able to provide is that our father (Michael George Hanson? Also used alias Smythe) was believed to be a 'deserter' from  HMS Implacable subsequent to her arrival in Sydney in December 1945.

Would MaritimeQuest be able to assist by advising how we may obtain a listing of the HMS Implacable's complement for that time period or alternatively a list of known deserters from the ship? Any advice or direction you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Terry Mosse-Robinson & Ray Marcelino (Hanson or alias Smythe)

I'm attempting to find out what information I can about my Grandfather, Neil McColl, who served on board HMS IMPLACABLE from 1944 until 1947. He was a stoker, and I understand the stokers maintained a tight-knit community even after they demobbed. I'm hoping that someone may recall his name being mentioned or even have a photograph in which he is featured? Thanks very much and I look forward to hearing back from you soon!

D. McColl, RCN

I believe my father served on the Implacable in 1945. The story is he jumped ship in Sydney and went under an alias Micheal Hanson thou it's possible his real name was George Hanson. I never met my father and know nothing about him except possibly born northern Ireland 1922 or 23 maybe someone will remember him don't know what position he had in navy.

Thank you,
Raymond Smythe

Would someone be so kind as to provide me with the date the HMS Implacable departed Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands in late September 1945.  With R.A.M.P.s onboard, the ship arrived at Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii October 5, 1945.

My father, Daniel Joseph Tyndall, was on HMS Implacable being a Japanese POW.  I am trying to trace any record of him anyone might have. He lied about his age to join the army but actually he was born in 1923.

Thanks,
Kathy
