Note the story in column 6:" Churchill Is Blamed For Athena Loss"
(Athenia was the first British ship sunk in World War II. This story, a creation of the Nazi Propaganda Minister Dr. Joseph Goebbels, was intended to deflect the attention away from the fact that a German submarine sank an unarmed passenger ship on the day Britain entered the war. The Germans, especially Adolf Hitler, were concerned that the Allies would equate the loss of Athenia to the loss of the Lusitania during the Great War and turn American public opinion against Germany.)
