Note the report in column 6: "Axis Sub Surrenders"
(No German submarines had been sunk off Brazil and I have no record of an Italian submarine named Pamplona. The persistent reports, becoming more detailed as the days go by, leads me to believe that something happened, but no Italian submarines were sunk or captured in May of 1942.)

(Click on the image for a readable version.)

Note the report in columns 5-6: "No. 2 Gestapo Wounded in Attempt On Life"
(SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, Deputy Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, A.K.A. 'Heydrich the Hangman' had indeed been attacked in Prague. Two Czechs, trained in England, had attempted to assassinate him, but the attack failed to kill him outright, but it did kill him. He languished in hospital, suffering, until June 4th when he died of blood poisoning from a piece of upholstery from his car seat that was blown into his body by the bomb. Note that the photo is not of Heydrich.)

May 27, 1942: Front page of the Biddeford Daily Journal, Biddeford, Maine.
(Click on the image for a readable version.)

Note the report in column 8: "First Sinking Of New England Fishing Vessel"
(The unidentified boat was the 324-ton trawler Foam, which was sunk by U-432. The only casualty was Engineer Mack Wallace.)

(Click on the image for a readable version.)

Note the report in column 1: "Plane Sinks Sub Off Martinique, Avenging Blakeley Torpedoing"
(The report was nothing more than wishful thinking. No U-Boat had been sunk.)

(Click on the image for a readable version.)

Note the report in column 5: "Nazis Execute 400 Hostages, Mostly Poles, in Reprisal"
(This was a small reprisal killing when compared to what the Germans would do to the Czech people for the assassination attempt on Heydrich.)
