Historical note: On this day Chelmno extermination camp in central Poland began operations. This was not a traditional death camp as it did not have gas chambers. Specially constructed vans, with the exhaust vented into the back, were used to kill between 150,000 and 200,000 people. The victims were placed into the van at the camp and driven to a location far enough away that they would all be asphyxiated. The bodies were then unloaded and thrown into a mass grave.

Also on this day about 27,000 Jews were murdered in Riga, Latvia.
