Note the report at top right: "C.O. Died A Hero In Shelled Ship"

Arnold Baker, a conscientious objector, was posthumously praised for his actions while on the freighter Eurylochus when that ship was shelled and sunk by the German Hilfskreuzer [auxiliary cruiser] Kormoran on Jan. 29, 1941.)
Also note the report in column 3: "Six U.S. Nurses Missing in Torpedoed Ship"
(The unnamed ship was the Norwegian freighter Vigrid, which was sunk by U-371 on June 24, 1941. Of the six nurses mentioned as missing, Phyllis Evans, Dorothea Koehn, Dorothy Morse and Nancy Pott, perished. The writer got some of the details mixed-up. The Mrs. Breckenridge mentioned, was not on the Virgid, but was lost on the Maasdam, along with Maxine C. Loomis.)
