Note the report in column 1: "Hull Men Survive U-boat Encounter"
(The writer was apparently not informed by the authorities that the trawler, HMS Barbara Robertson, was not a fishing boat, but an armed minesweeper (some sources indicate it was an anti-submarine trawler.) The trawler was sunk by the same submarine, U-30, which hit the battleship, HMS Barham, with a torpedo later in the same day. The submarine commander, Fritz-Julius Lemp (who sank the first British ship lost in World War II, the Athenia) stopped a Swedish freighter less than an hour later and requested that the master pick up the survivors, but for unknown reasons he did not. They were picked up by a British destroyer about 12 hours later.
