January 2, 1943 the harbor of Bone, Algeria was bombed by Ju 87s' and Fw 190s', two freighters were sunk, Empire Metal and St. Merriel. HMS Alarm J-140 was grounded to avoid sinking and three other freighters were damaged. HMS Ajax was also hit and badly damaged, three of her boiler rooms were damaged or out of action all together. She had to be towed to Gibraltar and made seaworthy, then she went to the New York Naval Shipyard for permanent repairs which took until October. Eleven men on the freighters were killed, I don't know if any aircraft were lost. |
