In preparation for the landings at Lingayen Gulf a group of U.S. warships were assigned to sweep the gulf before the invasion force arrived. During this operation on January 6, 1945 the Japanese mounted a heavy Kamikaze attack which damaged a number of ships, including the transport USS Brooks APD-10 (ex DD-232). The aircraft crashed the ship on the port side, damaging the steam lines and flooding the forward engine room, eight of the crew were killed or died of their wounds and the ship never returned to active service again. |
