On July 19, 1878 the White Star Line's Adriatic while en route from Liverpool to Queenstown ran into a dense fog near the Tuscar Rock off south Wales. With the engines stopped, perhaps proceeding under sail, a collision occurred between Adriatic and the brigantine E.A. Pyke (some sources give the name as G.A. Pike). Lifeboats were lowered immediately, but sadly only one of the six men on board was saved. |
