Daily Event for May 31

Sometimes the weapon of choice is your ship itself, such was the case in the sinking of the UC-75 on May 31, 1918. The U-boat, which had sunk 57 ships up to this point, was on the attack again. She attacked a convoy with no success and was damaged herself by the freighter Blaydonian when she ran over the boat.

The damage was bad enough that the commander surfaced the boat where he was greeted by the HMS Fairy, one of the escorting destroyers. The captain of the Fairy rammed the U-boat in the stern and then turned around and rammed the conning tower, sending the UC-75 to the bottom with 19 of her crew.

With the threat of the U-boat gone Fairy was in trouble. Built in 1897 Fairy was about one third the size of the U-boat and now her bows were caved in and water was flooding the forward section of the ship. The damage was beyond what the crew could handle and soon the Fairy was on the bottom next to the UC-75. Making 58 the number of ships sunk by the UC-75.
