October 4, 1928: The French submarine Ondine went missing on a voyage from Cherbourg to Toulon. Ondine, one of four in the Ariane class, displaced only 787 tons when submerged, was launched on May 8, 1925. The fourth and last boat in the class, Danae, was not launched until Sept. 11, 1942 and was scuttled to avoid capture on Nov. 9, 1942. While it is not known for sure it is suspected that a Greek freighter ran down the Ondine killing all 43 of her crew. |
