Daily Event for November 6

November 6, 1943: The USS Beatty DD-640 was attacked and sunk by German aircraft. The Beatty, a Gleaves class destroyer was used primarily for convoy escort duty since she was commissioned in May 1942. Beatty was however involved in the North African and Sicily invasions. On Nov. 6, 1943 while escorting a convoy from Oran the Luftwaffe paid a visit. The aircraft attacked the convoy off Cape Bourgaroun, Algeria, Beatty was torpedoed, broke in two and sank slowly. Since the ship took over two hours to sink the casualties were less than would be expected. However, twelve US sailors died on the Beatty. Beatty received three battle stars for service in World War 2.
